About
Samnangseong Fortress, which surrounds Jeondeungsa Temple, is said according to legend to have been built by the three sons of Dangun to defend against foreign invaders. During the Goryeo Dynasty, when the capital was moved to Ganghwado to escape the Mongol invasion, this is where a 120-day Buddhist ceremony for resistance was held at the temporary palace within the fortress. The fortress also served as a storage site for the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty for 250 years, and was the site of victory against French forces during the Byeonginyangyo incident. It's also where righteous army forces won a week-long battle against Japanese forces in the late 19th century. Having continuously intertwined with Korean history for 5,000 years, this is a site that embodies national pride and identity. To honor and share this proud history, the Samnangseong History and Culture Festival has been held every year since starting on the first Saturday of October, reaching its 26th edition this year.
